Senior Networking Engineer (m/f/d) VPN (IPsec)

You want to work deep in the network stack and build the foundation for secure communication instead of just configuring systems? You are interested in how modern network security concepts like IPsec, mTLS, or Zero Trust are implemented on OS level – and want to actively shape them?

Then this role gives you the opportunity to combine system-level development , networking , and platform engineering in a forward-looking environment.

For our CTO Office , where we focus on topics such as technology and platform strategy, innovation and funded projects, IP and product management, as well as the development of our Software Factory and internal tooling landscape, we are looking for your support nearly 100 % remotely .

Your tasks

• Design, develop, and integrate networking and security components with a focus on VPN technologies (especially IPsec) and modern approaches like mTLS or Zero Trust
• Work deep in the network stack on operating system level , including low-level and kernel-related components
• Build and evolve core platform capabilities that enable secure communication in dynamic environments
• Take ownership of networking topics and drive their technical direction within the platform
• Leverage and integrate Open Source software and contribute improvements back upstream (e.g. Linux kernel, systemd, Nix ecosystem )
• Design and implement robust testing strategies (unit, integration, end-to-end) to ensure long-term software quality
• Continuously improve our CI/CD processes, observability , and secure development practices
• Support internal teams in using and building on top of our platform and OS components
  

Your Profile

• University degree in computer science or a related field. Alternatively, you have roughly equivalent experience to a university degree
• Experience in software development with a focus on networking
• Strong understanding of networking concepts and protocols (e.g. TCP/IP, VPN, IPsec; ideally also mTLS or Zero Trust concepts )
• Experience with modern software engineering practices such as automated testing, CI/CD, or observability
• Experience with code reviews, debugging, and maintaining complex software systems
• Understanding of how cryptography is applied in network security is a plus
• Open Source enthusiast that already enjoys working upstream or is motivated to learn how to
• Experience working close to the operating system (e.g. Linux, network stack, kernel-related or system-level components)
• Proficiency in English (German is a plus, but not required), as our team language is English
